Gucci is currently under boycott by many in the black community as called for by Soulja Boy and T.I. for selling a black face turtle neck. Mariah Carey put on a Gucci t-shirt the very next day, but she’s Mariah and no one’s going to tell her what to put on. But at least she didn’t open her mouth about it like Floyd Mayweather did. Not only did he decline to participate in the boycott, he went shopping at Gucci Tuesday. About the situation, he told TMZ while there “I’m not no follower, I do what the f*ck I wanna do.”
“You said they’re gonna be upset with me? I love it, I love it, I love it. See, the thing is this, I live for myself. I do what I want to do.”
The $900 black face resembling sweater they sold apparently didn’t bother him too much as he was seen with a ton of bags from Gucci there outside.
“I’m not a follower,” Floyd added … “You know when everybody else they say, ‘Everybody gonna boycott?’ I say guess what, this boy gonna get on a yacht and live life.”
“We all know racism still exists but that’s not gonna stop my drive. I’ve got friends from all walks of life and to me of course, black lives matter first … but my thing is this, I’m gonna continue to go out there live life and be happy.”
He added, “Half of the people that’s on social media saying, ‘Don’t wear this, don’t wear that,’ I ain’t never seen none of them supporting The Money Team.”
After the Gucci shopping he went over to Neiman Marcus next. He said he spent $200k – $300k there. You can’t be mad at the man for living his life, that is unless you’re 50 Cent. The meme king used this opportunity to throw a little fun shade at the boxing champ by drawing the blackface sweater on him in a meme. He also let him know “Champ you need a publicist,” he wrote, “man you saying all the wrong s–t fool.”
Glitzers, do you think Mayweather was okay speaking his mind about not wanting to get involved in a boycott? To put his words into context, there have been more boycotts in recent years than one can keep up with from Starbucks to keurig to Chic-Fil-A. One does have to ask where does it stop and if there’s a better way of advocacy. Thoughts?
