All day the world has been both torn with their reaction to US sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson being suspended for marijuana usage. It started out with those who said rules are rules and she should have known better, others who felt she was being a lazy pothead and then those who asked the obvious. If we’re in a culture that has been moving towards legalization for years now, why for any reason would someone be suspended in sports for smoking marijuana? She’s competing in the Olympics. It isn’t as though it’s a performance enhancing drug making her move faster.
But when she stated that it had to do with trauma after her mother died right before trials started. That would be enough to get to anyone. And now Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has weighed in on the matter admonishing the International Olympic Committee calling on them to “reconsider” their decision to suspend Richardson over her positive drug test.
“The criminalization and banning of cannabis is an instrument of racist and colonial policy,” AOC wrote on Twitter. “The IOC should reconsider its suspension of Ms. Richardson and any athletes penalized for cannabis use.”
