Imagine going to the bank and passing the teller a withdrawal slip and then getting arrested because they thought it was a robbery attempt. Well that’s what happened to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler in January during a simple trip to an Atlanta Bank of America. He told Variety Magazine about a police report filed Wednesday that he had robbed a bank that “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”

On January 7th he passed a note that said “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.” That’s when the teller told her boss and together they called the police. He was arrested and his colleagues waiting in the car with the engine running were detained as well. After his identity was confirmed along with having a Bank of America account, he and his colleagues were released. A Bank of America spokesperson told Variety, “We deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler.”

At the time of this event, Coogler was in the midst of filming the Black Panther sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. As for what the bank teller and their manager were doing to not be able to comprehend a basic scenario as this, we may never know. But someone should definitely be punished for that level of stupidity.
