It’s been 12 years since Chico DeBarge released a full length album and if his recent behavior is any indication, it won’t be any time soon that he gets around to doing another. He was in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Burbank, California using a wire trying to break into a car when the police showed up. Well it turns out the car was his and he had left his keys inside but since he had already been looking suspicious, they decided to search him. At that point they found meth in his pockets and drug paraphernalia inside of his car.
See, where DeBarge went wrong was knowing he was breaking the law and choosing to act suspicious in the parking lot. If you’re going to have drugs in your pocket, doing something to alert the police over in your direction isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do. If you can’t get in your car, call a locksmith, for Christ’s sake. And now, because he felt like being MacGyver, he got sent to the Burbank City Jail. Formal charges are pending review by the City Attorney and he’s since been released.
Now this isn’t DeBarge’s first run in with the law regarding drugs. In the late 80s he did some time for drug trafficking which means he apparently has a history of moving it as well. Him and his brother Bobby Debarge paid millions in fines and served 5 years for cocaine trafficking back then. The history of the Debarge family and specifically Chico and bad behavior or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time goes back decades. Take ’03 for instance. He did an interview last year talking about a violent club stabbing he was in the same night of a Tyler Perry play in Philadelphia where his friend was used to go on a date with a girl to make her man jealous, an Italian mobster when he didn’t know she had a man. As the predicted club brawl ensued, he ended up getting stabbed just being there. Now that sounds like an incredibly made up story, and likely drug related at that, but who knows. At this point, DeBarge is in his mid-50s and still getting busted for drugs, we just want to see him get himself together and seriously hope these events don’t continue.
