It’s been close to a week since the former Red Sox player David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic, adding him to the list of Americans attacked there. Luckily he didn’t have the same fatal experience about a handful of others there but his daughter Alexandria Ortiz has pointed out that in light of what happened to him, her father has been amazingly optimistic.
“I find myself complaining on a daily basis yet chaos has struck but my dad hasn’t complained once. I promise on my life he has not once looked for pity, tears, or even indicated how he feels in his current state,” she wrote in an Instagram post. If there’s any consolation for what happened, surveillance footage of the attack has been released to the public and the shooter has been arrested along with 5 other suspects. Apparently there was an $8,000 bounty on his head to kill him.
As for Alexandria’s message about how her father is doing, she said he’s a bit hungry because all he’s able to eat is ice now, but he’s stated, “Even the toothpaste tastes good here.” And for those asking what they can do, she said she wants them to learn to have the same type of optimism her father has, trying to find the positivity in everything including poverty. His wife Tiffany Ortiz on the other hand has said, “His condition is guarded and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery.”
The motive behind the attack isn’t clear but one hypothesis is that he was having an affair with the wife of a popular drug lord who was in turn jealous and ordered the hit on him. This was confirmed by three law enforcement sources Monday. We’re all praying for the best just the same.
