We reported recently that Drake was so pissed about his Wheelchair Jimmy character on Degrassi that he allegedly threatened legal action to have the show’s writers have him walk again. Well the Executive Director of Wheelchair 4 Kids, Madeline Robinson, has a different view on this saying he validated a lot of kids’ existence with his television portrayal. She said he made them kind of cool and helped instill confidence in them even if he didn’t like what he was doing himself. In other words, it was much needed representation.
She asked, “When was the last time you went to a mall and saw a kid in a wheelchair hanging out with other kids?” And despite controversy surrounding Drake wanting out of his wheelchair or else, the writer who claimed his attorney was sent after the show threatening them for having him in a wheelchair said that he did eventually come around and agree that his character in a wheelchair was a powerful moment for television. Robinson also said, “It is great when we see our kids being represented.”
