Dwayne Johnson is the quintessential do anything man in Hollywood right now so it would come as no surprise that he would be interested in taking on the role of James Bond. I mean he’s played Hercules and was a lead in G.I. Joe so why not? He reportedly has said he wants to be the action hero his grandfather had the pleasure of acting besides in the past saying, “My grandfather [Peter Maivia] was a Bond villain in ‘You Only Live Twice.’ I would like to follow in his footsteps and be the next Bond. I don’t want to be a villain. Gotta be Bond.”
The film his grandfather was in was You Only Live Twice from 1967 starring Sean Connery with Teru Shimada as the villain. While his grandfather had a minor role, his vying for the top slot has the potential to have one of the biggest family bonding moments in industry history. How many people get to say they got to play in the same film franchise as their grandad over 50 years later? And if he gets the role, he has Idris Elba to fight against because he was trending not long ago for being considered for the role. With #OscarsSoWhite being a not too distant memory, we’re not sure if things have evolved enough for that to happen but if not, there will still be plenty others vying for the spot, we’re sure. The search for the next James Bond will begin September 2022.
