Most parents cringe at the idea of their children so much as hearing them having sex so imagine having them in the room present for the whole ordeal. That was the case for Austin Powers star Elizabeth Hurley who shot a sex scene directed by her 22 year old son Damian for his directorial debut of Strictly Confidential. The film which deals with grief over the loss of a loved one hat tips his own personal experience about his father committing suicide during COVID. His mother’s involvement came from her promising Damian at 8 when he made his first short film that when he made his first feature, she would be in it and that’s exactly what she did. As for the sex scene, they’ve both said they were so busy that they were simply trying to get through their scenes and this was just one more thing to shoot.
“People are making a lot of fuss,” Hurley told People Magazine. ““I think there’s a lot of factors making it a particularly interesting scene for people.” She went on to say “There actually isn’t any nudity. Nobody’s exploited at all. We all felt comfortable doing it.” Her son Damian reflected, “We were so rushed,” adding “It was like, ‘Come on, let’s shoot it!’” During an appearance on The View, when Joy Behar asked about the “hot scenes” she had with another woman, she said “The important thing is that he was directing me in those scenes, not sneaking into my bedroom with a video camera. We were on a set and they were grown-up.” Behar responded, “He’s a director, not a pervert.” Hurley spoke of the ordeal saying “With Damian behind the camera, I felt really safe, because I knew he’d really look out for me, look after me, both on the set, in the edit, in the post, and I felt for the first time actually ever doing a scene like that, I knew that he’d be true to what we knew we were shooting.” She said working with him was so easy that an intimacy coordinator, who sets the stage for intimate scenes to make sure everyone is comfortable and informed on what’s happening wasn’t necessary.
Behar then quipped, “Was she easy to direct, or was it like, ‘Come on, kiss her harder.’” She told the show host, “Our only thought, and everyone is making a massive deal about this, but our only thought at the time was it was one of nine scenes we were shooting that day, it was just, don’t lose the light, make the scene as beautiful as possible and go on,” Damian continued, adding that the set was closed for the intimate scenes. “It wasn’t until now that we’re like, ‘Oh, should we have given that more thought?’ And if you’re really concerned about the idea of a guy directing his mother’s intimate scenes, the two share clothes, as he recently revealed to The Sunday Times, so the chances are he isn’t looking at her like that.
The film’s sexy scenes didn’t come without criticism. Brian Orndorf at Blu-ray.com accused Damian of exploiting his mother’s sex appeal with a 3/10 raating saying, “The helmer doesn’t push the picture’s sauciness and he’s mostly fatigued when it comes to blowing minds, but Strictly Confidential does have the novelty of a son exploiting the sex appeal of his mom for the benefit of an otherwise uninteresting whodunit.” Jeffrey Lyles at Lyles Movie Files who mused: ‘Elizabeth Hurley gets the film’s raciest scene, which felt weird to watch play out considering her son is shooting it. That’s after realizing Elizabeth Hurley won’t appear in any scene without a seriously plunging neckline. And Damian Hurley has no qualms of zooming the camera in tight for a close up. If it’s possible to have secondhand embarrassment for a mother and son, Strictly Confidential makes it a reality.”
‘Strictly Confidential’ entered theaters on April 5th and is available On Demand for those interested in watching.
