Marcell Ozuna is an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves and was arrested May 29th in Sandy Springs, GA for choking his wife Genesis Guzman. “Take your hands off her. Get on the ground!” an officer is heard shouting in the video. The police stated he not only choked her but struck her with his cast and threatened to kill her. He was originally accused of felony aggravated assault by strangulation but eventually was charged with misdemeanor family uproar and joined a pretrial diversion procedure. He also had to finish 200 hours of community service and anger management counseling.
It’s important to note that this week Ozuna received a 20 game suspension which is equivalent to time served and he’ll be back with the team for the beginning of the 2022 season. He was on administrative leave last year as MLB examined evidence. Now there have been plenty of athletes who have been fired for attacking their spouses and it could be perceived that he did not get fired because he once led the National League in the COVID season. He also signed a $65 million contract with the Braves last year. At the same time, the attack wasn’t as violent as say Zac Stacy knocking his ex around so perhaps it was deemed to be less serious. Either way, we know sports leagues usually don’t play with these guys and this appears to be a slap on the wrist for what others would have been canned over.
