Cameron Sutton was a cornerback for the Detroit Lions who broke numerous multi-decade records to include helping the franchise win a division title for the first time in three decades along with two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since 1957. That all came crashing down when word of him having a warrant for his arrest came March 21st for domestic violence with an unnamed second party. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has announced that he turned himself in Sunday night stating, “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”
The allegations Sutton was facing included domestic battery by strangulation which is a third degree felony punishable up to 5 years in prison. And he allegedly fled the scene after it happened. When the warrant was originally announced he was at the Lions training facility and Lions president Rod Wood said he found out about it from the news like everyone else. “We learned about the warrant at the same time everybody else did on social media,” Wood told WJBK-TV last week. “We were able to speak to Cam because he was actually in our building. We found him. He was down with our strength staff. He kind of showed up unexpectedly to work out.”
And while the name of the victim of the assault wasn’t mentioned, we do know that his girlfriend is Courtney Alexander, who he’s been dating since 2019 when he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Together she helped him get into stones that are believed to transform people’s lives. He’s been seen bringing stones to practice with him, so it’s clear the two were very close.
Domestic violence accounts for an exceptionally large percentage of arrest for members of the league, 48% to be exact compared to just 21% of arrests for men aged 25-29. Things have changed greatly within the NFL since Ray Rice’s arrest in 2014 due to public outcry and even more back in 2007 with the prevelance of viral videos on the internet with just as far to go. These victims deserve better.
