Janelle Monae appeared on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk show Wednesday and decided to come out as being non-binary. “I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely,” she told Jada. “I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ If I am from God, I am everything. I am everything, but I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything beyond the binary.”
During the interview she pointed out that when she sees people, their sexual orientation isn’t the first thing she sees. “I don’t see how you identify,” she said. “And I feel like that opens you up to fall in love with whoever, with any beautiful spirit.”
If you’ve paid attention, she’s actually hinted at this over the years. In January 2020 she tweeted the hashtag #IAmNonbinary where fans thought she might be coming out. A month later in an interview with with author Roxane Gay she said she was simply showing support for Nonbinary Day “and to bring more awareness to the community.”
