The reviews for the recent film adaptation of Cats have come in and they’re spectacularly bad. The film’s production and planning has been widely reported on because after all, this is one of the most known Broadway productions out there. But the excitement behind cast members such as Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba and Jason Derulo quickly turned into quite strong ridicule. The aggregated film critic site MetaCritic gave it an underwhelming 17/100.

Speaking in defense of his word was Jason Derulo when asked by paparazzi what he thought about the reviews of the film. Some would listen to this and accuse the paparazzi of trolling but when you actually hear what was said, you’d understand. It’s almost unavoidable. “Glad to report that Cats is everything you’d hoped for and more: a mesmerisingly ugly fiasco that makes you feel like your brain is being eaten by a parasite. A viewing experience so stressful that it honestly brought on a migraine,” Telegraph film critic Robbie Collin wrote. Leah Greenblatt with Entertainment Weekly asked, “What is ‘Cats’? Music, madness, a hairball in the cosmos … Even after 110 tumbling, tail-swishing, deeply psychedelic minutes, it’s hard to know if you ever really knew anything — except that C is for ‘Cats,’ C is for Crazy, and C is probably the grade this cinematic lunacy deserves, in the sense of making any sense at all.”

Derulo took things in stride, though, saying that reviews don’t matter. He described it as a “deportation into another dimension” and “a brave piece of art.” He pointed out that 40 years ago there was the same type of pushback and that people will come out to see the film regardless. He did, however, sneak in a jab in the end asking if the film critics ever produced anything. Ouch.

On a lighter note, he’s made headlines for an Instagram photo of him on stage in his underwear which has given him the nickname ‘Manaconda,’ with him commenting on how he was too big for Instagram as the post was removed. It’s been reported on for weeks with him giving endless commentary on the pic. He added this week that he was convinced that his manhood was edited down in the film using CGI. During an interview on Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen Live, he said, “They CGI-ed the dick out,” Derulo said. “Yeah, they did CGI. I noticed that. 125 percent. I can see it in the trailer, for sure.” So if anyone thought they were going to go look at the film in hopes to see more of what was on Instagram, you’re just going to be SOL.
