Jennifer Hudson Performs ‘I’ll Fight’ at the 2019 Oscars

Jennifer Hudson blew the stage away at the Dolby Theatre last night at the 2019 Oscars. First, she had quite the stage presence wearing a black and white tuxedo with an actual train to it practically the size of the stage. And it was appropriate to match the size of her voice. She sang the Diane Warren penned I’ll Fight before the backdrop of the Supreme Court as the song is a part of the soundtrack to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary RBG. The song was nominated for Best Original Song but unfortunately lost out to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for their song Shallow in their adaptation of A Star is Born.

Now the writer for this song, Diane Warren has once been said to be “the most important songwriter in the world” according to the former Chairman of EMI Music Publishing Peter Reichardt. That’s pretty serious but there’s always next time.

As for the film, RBG, it’s directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen. It’s the documentary that almost didn’t happen. They said when they first reached out to Ginsburg about doing the documentary as they’ve already interviewed her in the past and had a bit of a relationship, she said “not yet.” “We took that as actually an encouraging sign that maybe she would be interested.” They continued to persist saying “We kept at it and were persistent without being annoying, we hoped. Eventually she agreed to let us talk to her family and some of her former colleagues and clients and to film her at some of her public speaking engagements. And then we wormed our way even closer and were able to capture some intimate moments.” The film is about her love affair with both the Constitution and her deceased husband Marty of 56 years.

If you’re a JHud fan, you’ll be happy to learn she’ll be in a new film version of the broadway musical Cats in theaters this December. She’ll be alongside some other A listers including Taylor Swift and Idris Elba. She’s also going to be headlining the Soluna Festival in the Dallas Arts District. Despite it being a month long festival spanning from the 4th to the 28th, her performance will be April 20th alongside the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
