Jennifer Lopez revealed during her new Netflix documentary titled Halftime that she had quite the tumultuous relationship with her mother Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodriguez saying it included being beaten as a child. “She [Rodriguez] did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough. She thrashed the living daylights out of you,” the pop star stated.
Her mother was there in the documentary to tell her side saying, “I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn’t to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better,” Rodriguez says in a scene. “Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time, to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot.”
Lopez says she left home at 18 over disagreements over her future. She said she couldn’t focus on schoolwork because she was concentrated on dancing. “My mom was like, ‘If you’re gonna live in this house, you’re gonna get your education,'” Lopez recalls. “We got into a bad fight one night and I just left.”
Rodriguez says “I was far from the perfect mother. The one thing I can always say, everything I did, I did with their best interest at heart.”
In other JLo news, she says she wasn’t able to use the female symbol during her 2020 SuperBowl performance because director Hamish Hamilton said it wasn’t inclusive. He’s seen on camera telling her, “I’m going to probably be contentious now, but the only thing within it [the performance] that isn’t subtle – and actually is contentious, given everything that is going on with identity politics at this moment – is the female symbol. I think that could be viewed by some people as being actually exclusive.”
“It might have been something done in a Super Bowl a while back and doesn’t have the artistry. I understand the meaning behind it but what you are saying within the show is much more powerful than having that symbol out there.”
The show, which showed 130 dancers was designed to celebrate the achievements of women, like the 75 million albums she’s managed to sell as an artist.
JLo’s also recently become engaged to Ben Affleck almost 20 times since the last time they were engaged. The two have been out house hunting taking a look at homes in upwards of $68 million. Actor Darryl Chambers spoke about their hunt on TMZ
