Kate Moss opened up to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs about why she testified in defense of her ex Johnny Depp during his trial battling Amber Heard in May. The topic at hand that she addressed was a rumor that he had thrown her down a flight of steps in the 90s when they dated. “He was about to push her down the stairs and the moment before that happened, I remembered information I had heard that he pushed a former girlfriend – I believe it was Kate Moss – down the stairs,” Heard told the courtroom. “In all of my relationship to date with Johnny, I hadn’t landed a blow. And I, for the first time, hit him, like actually hit him.”

The explanation that Moss gave for this accounting of facts is that she actually slipped down a couple steps following a rainstorm, screamed for help and Depp came to her rescue. “I screamed because I didn’t know what happened to me and I was in pain,” she told the jury. “He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention … He never pushed me, kicked me or threw me down any stairs.” And the two were seen out partying in London days after her testimony. As someone who has had to speak out against false claims of abuse by someone in my circle, I certainly understand the significance of showing up to set the record straight.

In other Kate Moss news, she went into her history of substance abuse. She became the poster girl for cocaine use for years, something that she says brutally hurt her. “I felt sick and was quite angry, because everybody I knew took drugs. So for them to focus on me, and to try to take my daughter away, I thought was really hypocritical.” She lost a number of campaigns and her career took quite the beating with her being labeled Cocaine Kate. In her case, her ex Jefferson Hack had to intervene and say that she was a good mother for those who were concerned, including her parents after the photos of her using cocaine circulated in the press in 2005. So you could say that her sticking up for Depp is just her passing along the good karma she received when the same was done for her almost 20 years ago.
