Love & Hip Hop star Mendeecees Harris has been allowed to travel to Dubai with wife Yandy Smith to renew their vows while under probation, but we have one question. Are the two legally married to begin with? You all may remember that they wed on camera in 2015 before revealing they weren’t legally married.
Smith said at the time, “I have a union with Mendeecees, but I did not go into a partnership with Mendeecees and the government.” Why people continuously insist on getting married on television but not really being married is always amazing and doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Brandy did it, Joseline Hernandez did… and Cynthia Bailey almost did it when her sister and mother hid her wedding license the day of the wedding.
But back to Mendeecees. He is still under supervised release until 2025 where his travel has to be approved. And after 4 years behind bars, it would behoove him to continue following these rules. His probation officer has stated in court documents that he has proven himself to be compliant thus far, which is a good thing.
What Harris is not been compliant with is his loyalty to his wife. In a recent episode of Couples Retreat, he and his “wife” discussed what him being behind bars was like. He said she didn’t email him for two months, to which she said that’s because they spoke everyday. After arguing the amount of time the two did actually speak to each other, when asked if he would hold her down if the roles were reversed, he said “If the shoes were on the other foot, I don’t know what I would be able to do.”
And there you have it ladies and gentlemen. Now some things you just don’t say out loud and you damn sure don’t say on television. Had this been any other couple, he would have been hit in the mouth for that. While Smith was getting dragged for sticking by him, it really should have been him getting dragged for daring to say something.
On a personal note, as someone who studies policy around ex-offenders, a good amount of them leave prison and never get their lives back together. The fact that he was able to return to the same situation he was in as before and continue getting television checks makes him an anomaly and should be kissing the ground his wife walks on daily. But this is no surprise considering they weren’t legally married before which one could only assume was his doing.
