Magic Johnson’s eldest son EJ Johnson just turned 28 this past Thursday and celebrated over the weekend with his dad and his family. Magic tweeted “The family had an amazing dinner at the house to celebrate E.J.’s birthday yesterday.” He continued his well wishes on Instagram saying, “Happy birthday to my amazing son EJ! I love how you touch the world. Continue to let your light shine! I love you!”

EJ Johnson’s embrace by his parents is significant with this being LGBT history month and so many other black men aren’t afforded the same luxury of an understanding family. And thank God that they did as he’s gone on to be one of the first openly gay black male stars of a reality series and has had a pretty good career already at age 28.

Another celebratory message came from his mother, Cookie Johnson, wife of Magic for nearly 30 years saying, “Happy Birthday My Love @ejjohnson_!!! You are a bright light in my life, and I feel blessed everyday since the day you were born. Have a beautiful birthday!!!” He responded “Love you mom! I am beyond blessed to have such an amazing woman as a mother and grateful to be showered in your unconditional love.”

Parents take note. This is a lot easier than trying to beat it out of your children. He first came out at 17 and about his public image has said to Ebony magazine in 2019, “I can be [masculine], I can be [feminine]. I can do whatever I want with it and work with it,” he said. “If I want to [dress in drag], then I’ll do that. But I don’t want to do that all the time.” It was still not an easy process as he shared with Jada Pinkett Smith on her Red table Talk show that it took a little time for his father to come around but he eventually did. And his dad still looks out ofr him. Magic Johnson did Anderson Cooper’s show last Monday speaking about how he still has “the talk” with his sons about safely dealing with the police which shows he has love for him which is a good thing. Anyway, happy belated birthday EJ. Hope you enjoyed it.
