The family of rapper Nipsey Hussle may finally receive some justice following his untimely death in South L.A. outside of his Marathon Clothing store where he was gunned down this past March. A grand jury indicted Eric Ronald Holder, Jr. for one count of murder, two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He’s accused of shooting two other people during the melee. If convicted, he could serve life in prison. He plead not guilty on Tuesday after being held on $5 million bond since April. His indictment allows the case to proceed without having a preliminary hearing. He’s scheduled to return for a pretrial hearing June 18th in Department 100 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
During the case up until recently, he was represented by Christopher Darden who worked on the OJ Simpson case but withdrew due to death threats he was receiving. “As for my reasons for withdrawing I don’t know whether I will disclose them later or not,” Darden wrote on a Facebook post. “I only know that as a lawyer it is my duty to protect the rights of my clients even in the face of threats or angry mobs … I cannot understand why in 2019 some people would deny a black man his 6th Amendment right to counsel of his choice. Or why defending such a man should invite threats not only against me but against my children too … Just as they were in 1995 — Cowards never change.”
This isn’t the end of the legal issues his family is currently going through. A court just ruled his 10 year old daughter to continue living with his sister instead of her mother. The family believe the mother isn’t fit to take care of her daughter, leaving her to leave the courtroom angry several news outlets reported. A DUI from a few years ago where she plead no contest and was on probation was a contributing factor. Her criminal record actually goes pretty far to include resisting arrest and disturbing the peace in 2006. She also didn’t show for court on May 15th, resulting in a bench warrant for her arrest. Hussle’s family’s seeking custody stating the mother isn’t fit to take care of her child. Updates will be given as they’re provided.
