Veteran actor Matthew McConaughey has been making headlines since at least April when he said to USA TODAY that he would be “be a fool not to consider” running to deny the current Governor Abbott a third term. Well today he released a 3 minute video stating he’s no longer going to consider a run for office but instead wants to focus his efforts on the private sector.
“As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership. It is a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment,” he said.

He spoke on a podcast about his possibility of running in September, “I’m measuring it. Look, it’s going to be in some capacity. … I just — I’m more of a folksy and philosopher poet statesman than I am a, per se, definitive politician.”
He continued, “So I go, well, that’s a reason not to, but then I go, no, that’s exactly why you should, because politics needs redefinition, but I’m measuring, you know, what is my category? What’s my embassy?”
In his video today, he said about the process of exploring a political run that he learned “a lot” about Texas and American politics and that “our politics needs new purpose. That we have divides that need healing.” He says he wants to continue supporting businesses and entrepreneurs that he “believes are leaders.”
“Establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life. Organizations that have a mission to serve and build trust while also generating prosperity — that’s the American dream,” he said. “Politicians, the good ones, can help us get to where we need to go … but let’s be clear, they can’t do anything for us unless we choose to do for ourselves.”
Not to get too political but I just read a piece by The Hill titled, “GOP becoming a cult of know-nothings.” A lot of what we’ve witnessed over the past 5 years is a frustration with the political establishment and people willing to throw everything away to include the kitchen sink willing to support anything, even a fire ant to represent them. Experience isn’t valued anymore which I can understand. McConaughey can run even in the future but all I ask is that Americans not be a political experiment. Learn about how things work BEFORE you choose to run.
