Naomi Osaka may be ranked as the Number One tennis player according to the Women’s Tennis Association but that doesn’t offer her any clout as it pertains to flouting French Open rules… even if mental health is used as an excuse. She went on Twitter to respond to the whopping $15,000 fine she received for avoiding media after her opening win against Patricia Maria Tig. She simply wrote, “anger is a lack of understanding. change makes people uncomfortable.” That sounds as though she’s saying the tennis officials are only retaliating for not understanding what she’s going through. And she doesn’t sound very repetent either.
Now let’s compare her behavior to others. Her fine was $15,000. Benoit Paire was fined just $1,500 more than that for spitting on the court and arguing with an umpire in March. Sam Querrey violated covid protocols fleeing the country by jet when he was supposed to be on quarantine. His fine was just $5,000 more than hers and he put the safety of the general public at risk.
