For years, with all of the accusations and cases R Kelly has had, the bragging about beating all of his charges, etc., a lot of us never understood how he got away with marrying 15 year old Aaliyah 25 years ago. Well it appears his day has finally come. His latest charge is for bribing an Illinois government employee to get a fake id in 1994 to marry a “Jane Doe.” Though Aaliyah is not mentioned by name, the date the id was obtained was August 30th, the day before he married her which is why the media has identified Jane Doe as Aaliyah. It’s also worth noting that since Aaliyah’s birthday is August 25th, she had just recently turned 15, making it that much more sick. Earlier this year, Kelly’s attorney Steven Greenberg told ABC News that his client had “no idea” Aaliyah was 15 at the time of their marriage. Now keep in mind, Aaliyah had just released a hit album just months prior, Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number, which he was a producer on. One would think that she would have been all over television with her age mentioned on repeat. That’s usually what happens to teens in the business.
Kelly’s already been charged with racketeering, kidnapping, forced labor and sexual exploitation by Brooklyn prosecutors. He’s being accused of using his staff and assistants to help him pick out women and girls around the country to groom for sexual abuse. The number of charges he’s faced this year have been hard to keep up with but this 25 year old mystery case that no one seemed to understand how he got away with is finally coming full circle and hopefully to a close. Regarding this fake id charge, his attorney Douglas Anton called them “ridiculous and absurd.” Well, we’ll see what the legal system has to say about that.
