Rapper Lil Nas X, responsible for the smash crossover hit Old Town Road came out of the closet last night with a series of tweets including one saying “some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more,” and another showing a city skyline covered in rainbows saying “deadass thought i made it obvious” just in case it went over people’s heads.
Sources close to the rapper have stated that his inspiration for coming out came from his Sunday night show with Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus in front of 180,000 people in Glastonbury, England. The crowd to him was amazing and the support for him was incredible, incredible enough that he felt he had the support to share a secret about his life because he was tired of being in the closet anyway. He didn’t tell Miley or Billy he was going to do it but they support his decision just the same. The source says there’s even a possibility that he might become a symbol for the LGBT community or at least inspiration for others afraid of coming out. “Everything’s happening so fast his head is spinning. He may become a leader in gay rights, but not quite yet.”
The source also says he doesn’t feel it will hurt his career. We certainly hope not because this is a big win for the hip hop community which has largely not been that welcoming to LGBT artists over the years. The important thing for his LGBT fans is that from here on, he needs his support. A similar but unfortunate story happened with rapper ILoveMakonnen who literally just did an interview within the last week saying that he didn’t feel supported after coming out. You can’t ask to have a seat at the table and when your demographic shows up, you look the other way. Both artists, in fact need and should be supported.
