Rapper Scarface from the legendary group Geto Boys made the announcement over the weekend that he was running for city council in Houston but it was overshadowed by fellow group member Bushwick Bill who passed of stage 4 pancreatic cancer yesterday. Scarface, whose real name is Brad Jordan was confirmed to have filed the paperwork Monday declaring his intent to run for Council by the city’s secretary naming his campaign treasurer. The announcement came Saturday on Instagram when he wrote “I’m offering myself for service as the next Houston City Councilmember for District D.”
While it isn’t clear what sparked his interest in running for office, you can look back at last summer when he was given his own holiday by the Mayor on June 26th. During his speech he said, “You know me as Scarface, but now you get the opportunity to meet Brad Jordan. I’ve done a lot of music, you know. I’ve done a lot of speaking of social … words that take place in our community,” Scarface stated. “That Scarface has turned into Brad Jordan. I really want to let y’all know that I’m getting ready to make a super impact in the community because that’s the most important thing to me right now.”
Jordan happens to be a founding member of the organization The Positive Purpose Movement which works to empower under served communities through education and empowerment. He spoke to students about bringing music entrepreneurship programs to schools and has been quoted as “putting the neighbor back in the hood” showing he already has experience in working in the community and wants to take it a step further by getting into elected office. Unlike the publicity stunts many do as it pertains to getting into office, the fact that he is running for a local position shows his seriousness and we’re wishing him the best of luck in his election.
