Ricky Martin has been accused of domestic abuse earlier this month against who at the time was unknown. Now his brother Eric Martin revealed the victim as his 21 year old nephew Dennis Yadiel Sanchez who he’s said to have had a 7 month relationship with. While it isn’t clear what actions and crimes he committed with his nephew, after Sanchez cut things off with Martin, that’s when he began showing up to his home. That lead to Martin having a temporary restraining order filed against him. He’s denying all of the allegations.
Puerto Rican law has an incest law where sleeping with a relative is a fixed 50 year prison sentence alone. As for laws in the rest of the country, I believe only 2 states have it legal, New Jersey and Rhode Island and with most prison sentences ranging from a year to 3 to 5, Puerto Rico has probably the strongest incest law. And remember, we don’t know if any other crimes were involved here.
According to El Universal, Puerto Rican law states “They will be sanctioned with imprisonment for a fixed term of 50 years those people who have a relationship of kinship, ascending or descending; by consanguinity, adoption or affinity or collateral by consanguinity or adoption up to the third degree; or for sharing or having physical custody. And that on purpose they carried out a vaginal or anal sexual act, whether genital, digital or instrumental.”
Earlier this month Martin released a statement on Twitter about the matter saying, “The protection order entered against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the judicial process with the facts and dignity that characterize me. Because it is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity, and I receive them with all my heart.”
Martin’s reps also told the Associated Press, “We are very confident that when the true facts come out in this matter our client Ricky Martin will be fully vindicated.” His brother made a video about the restraining order saying, “Something is telling me that I have to speak, because I am not afraid to speak, or anything. I am not afraid and I do not have to hide anything.”
