News broke yesterday that the hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd lost their step-father Floyd Sullivan was shot dead in their hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi. The bizarre twist comes with the report that it was their 19 year old half-brother accused of doing it. Michael Sullivan was taken into custody “without incident” to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. This came “being detained on a psychological hold” and then was “released from a local psychological care facility and immediately arrested for murder.”

One half of the group Rae Sremmurd, Swae Lee went on Twitter asking for compassion saying, “I pray this world let’s me keep some compassion,” which is more than a lot of other people would say about a relative of theirs being killed. The fact his half brother was on a psychological hold obviously states there’s more to this story than meets the eye. Who knows if he was in his right state of mind at the time and our hearts definitely go out to him and his twin brother and fellow group member Slim Jxmmi.

Rae Sremmurd, whose real names are Khalif Malik Ibn Shamon Brown and Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown were raised by Sullivan since they were young teenagers. In a 2016 Fader interview, Swae Lee described as dad as “doing whatever he had to do. Keeping us in school, getting us to school,” referring to him selling drugs at the time. As sad as this situation is, they’re not alone. They’re not the first family to be touched with either mental illness or rage amongst family members and we hope they’ll be able to work through this and cope with the loss of their father. It’s definitely not something everyone takes well. Our prayers go out to the family.
