Actress and reality star Tori Spelling filed for divorce from her husband of nearly 20 years Dean McDermott Friday March 29th citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause. Court documents obtained by People Magazine state they were originally separated last summer on June 17, 2023 when McDermott wrote in a since deleted Instagram post that they had decided to go their different ways. And he decided to do it on their oldest son Liam’s 17th birthday. The post at the time read, “It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,” the Open Range actor wrote at the time. “We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time.”

In the divorce filing Spelling is asking the judge to remove her estranged husband’s ability to request spousal support, he’s to pay her legal fees, she wants full physical custody but is open to him having visitation rights and joint legal custody. The two have been together since the year her father Aaron Spelling’s death and cut her out of his will leaving her with only $800,000, something she’s held against her mother Candy Spelling since. The constant reports of things like being near bankruptcy, breaking up living in a $100 a night motel supposedly because of a mold problem in their rental home instead of the state of the relationship are all things that might cause strain on a relationship. Similar to Kim Zolciak, her spending habits effect her spouse as well. Starting in 2014 McDermott shared he struggled with substance abuse and almost committed suicide. If anything’s a damper on a relationship, warning about intention of suicide would be it. Just ask Melissa Rivers the toll of her father killing himself took on her mother Joan Rivers in the 80s.

Then there’s Tori’s own wild spending habits which have not changed over the years. Back in her 2013 book Spelling It Like It Is, she said “It’s not my fault I’m an uptown girl stuck in a midtown life. I was raised in opulence. My standards are ridiculously high. We can’t afford that lifestyle, but when you grow up silver spoon it’s hard to go plastic.” She added, “Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle, I can’t seem to let go of my expensive tastes. Even when my tastes aren’t fancy, they’re still costly. I moved houses to simplify my life, but lost almost a million dollars along the way.”

And regarding her reality tv contemporary Kim Zolciak, her husband has gone ballistic lately begging the courts to sell their marital home stating she’s left them essentially destitute with her spending. Her mother has said that while her daughter tries to make her look bad because she isn’t as generous as she feels, she’s said she’s paid her rent plenty of times and has hinted that the same girl she was when her father was alive that would drop $60,000 a day in Gucci is who she is today.. not spending as lavishly but she’s never really gotten her budgeting skills together.

For those wondering just what happened with these two, Spelling has vowed to share what happened in a new IHeartRadio podcast titled misSPELLING. In a two minute teaser, she’s seen nude with only her hair covering her chest, the preview is narrated by radio personality Ellen K, 61, saying “MisSPELLING is a new podcast from Tori Spelling. Who is the real woman behind the notorious Tori Spelling headlines? Is the mother of five living in a Beverly Hills manor or in an RV? Is she Donna Martin? Or is she a down-and-out divorcee? For someone who grew up with Hollywood mogul Aaron Spelling, was she daddy’s little girl? Or is she her father’s daughter? In a town where the lines are blurred, it’s finally time to clear the air with the misunderstood Ms. Spelling. Follow Tori as she confronts the missteps, the mistakes, and the misconceptions,” Ellen concluded. “Ms. Spelling is ready to reveal what’s real, what’s fake as she strips down her Hollywood persona.”

Whatever the case is with these two, we certainly wish them the best in co-parenting their 5 kids and we hope Spelling is able to pull a W out of this.
