Wendy Williams’ ex-husband Kevin Hunter opened up to Page Six about how unhelpful the production company behind The Wendy Williams Show was in Williams’ recovery from substance abuse. He says Debmar-Mercury didn’t want to contribute to anything that would lead to Wendy being away from her show. “Debmar would not support Wendy’s recovery efforts with the family,” Hunter says. “They would not sign off on anything that would’ve helped her recovery efforts.”

Mind you Wendy and Ellen were neck and neck for the top female talk show hosts in daytime television and to keep that record going, the investment might have actually been beneficial, especially seeing how things played out in the end. Hunter did admit that they did sit in an intervention staged on her behalf before saying, “They sat in a meeting with her whole family, including her now-deceased mom, and would not sign off on the recovery efforts that would’ve helped Wendy also get well and live and be sober. They basically said, ‘If you don’t stop drinking, you’re going to lose the show.’” The intervention took place about 45 days before it was news that Hunter had had a baby on the side with his mistress.

Now you might remember Williams saying before that she gave him an ultimatum that if he ever had a baby on her with someone else, that would be the end of their marriage. That was the line in the sand and he crossed it anyway. And who reasonably would expect sobriety from someone in a situation like that? She did go into a sober house but a source close to the show told Page Six that she wasn’t all the way in on the idea. That also played out on her Lifetime biopic where she said she agreed so that she could get back to her show.

“It’s safe to say that when she came out of the sober house before [she divorced Hunter] that she still wasn’t capable of making all the decisions,” the source says. “She wasn’t capable then, but she was hiding it.”

Today, as Williams prepares for a comeback with a new podcast, we simply hope that she has the support system around her to make sure she’s doing well and in good health. After all, like her or hate her, there is only one Wendy Williams. She didn’t get that star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for nothing!
