Kirk Franklin has been making headlines since viral footage of his 33 year old son Kerrion Franklin made about him cursing him out for all he was worth. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you have a healthy appetite for profanity, F bombs and the N word when watching. The video is described by Kerrion as being an example of his tense and non-existing relationship he has with his father that had lead him to not so much as be able to get memorabilia from his childhood. In 2018 he went on Instagram saying his father was trying to kill him and told the public if something happened, they should know it’s him.

The original video if anyone missed, was captioned with “This is why I’m done. No father should speak to their children like this. If I have any issues it’s because Of this type of treatment that ii deal with behind closed doors. Hanging up in my face, No apology, no compassion, no effort. Stop telling me to go home to my family I don’t even know where they live. I don’t think I’ll ever trust my father to be alone around him ever again. I didn’t want to do this. I probably won’t release the entire recording because It’s too embarrassing that Im even dealing with this. No matter what ppl think I pray my dad deals with his deep hatred toward me. I don’t feel sate around him at all. This recording is recent it is not from 2018 just to clarify. Im going to learn from these experiences, live my life in pease and make beautiful art jj.” During the conversation, Kirk can be heard saying, “I will break yo neck (N-word).”
Since this came about publicly, Kirk has apologized for his actions saying he lost his temper and isn’t perfect. “Recently my son and I had an argument that he chose to record,” Franklin said in a video responding to his son’s post. “I felt extremely disrespected in that conversation and I lost my temper and I said words that are not appropriate and I am sincerely sorry to all of you. I sincerely apologize.”

The video of him cursing at his son involved him saying, “you need to get your skinny motherf*****g ass back out the godd*mn way before I put my foot in your a**.” He went on to shout “I will break your neck if you ever disrespect me.”
Also, he posted to his Instagram Story about how his dad only apologized to the public and not to him which is why he’s done with him. A family friend of theirs, Jon Drummond who has sang with Kirk commented on the situation saying that Kerrion was taking it out of context.

I decided to sleep on this story and revisit it the next day because I found it disturbing and I know how church people by default will attack the son as being unruly and will ask why did he go to the public about it. As someone who grew up in church in front of everyone, I’ve known many people to do this. I’ve also known people to rebel from church based on how they were treated. When asked my opinion, I told someone that I didn’t have a dog in the fight and that the general public has no right to tell others what is going on in their family. I have no idea what Kirk Franklin is like off stage, nor do I know how his family treats him.
I do know that in growing up in church and having a bit of a combative relationship with family of mine when I was in high school, I was yelled at, called everything but a child of God but I certainly wasn’t cursed at so I’m a bit shocked at that. I shouldn’t be, but I am. I just didn’t grow up around profanity as either a dynamic with my family or with Christians. I still don’t curse around family or people in church. All I can say is to pray for them. It’s a sad thing to watch, honestly.
