Yseult’s command of presence in her 2024 song Bitch You Could Never is the type of aura that if you didn’t know who she is you will by the end of the song. A type of high energy runway energy, confrontational fight song written about a girl trying to be her. If I were to put the feeling I’ve had when someone was copying me into music, this would likely be it, down to the yelling. Some years ago when PopGlitz was new, one of my peers who had written for MTV had started copying my site literally word for word and all I can say is the level of screaming she’s doing is exactly how I felt at the time.
The video to the song is the real kicker. Filmed in a typical sterile office environment, the intro gives homage to the 90s viral video of a man destroying a computer at work, named BadDay.mpg. And from that moment on the feeling of impending doom that something was going to happen covered the room as she walked in in very high fashion, boss energy attire aiminng a golf club at the woman in the office she said was trying to be her. The woman spends the entire video trying to escape her wrath before finally getting caught in the end. As someone whose favorite people to follow on social media are Natalie Marshall aka Corporate Natalie and Ross Pomerania aka Corporate Bro, it’s understandable why I’d gravitate to this type of work. Kudos to Shadrinsky as director for the vision.
And lastly, Yseult herself is a French singer-songwriter who most recently performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony. The song Bitch You Could Never was released on her Y.Y.Y/I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA independent label. Former Vogue Editor and stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson has said the song makes her feel like she can punch through a brick wall. And sometimes that’s all we need is a song to give us that type of motivation… motivation that we feel we can do it, not to actually carry it through. Please, protect your fists, people.
