There had been a campaign to keep Elon Musk from hosting SNL and mostly because people felt that that’s a job for actual talent and not something your bank account should get you. There of course were other reasons such as him essentially calling COVID a joke, employee abuse, etc. But he still got his way and hosted Saturday Night Live last night with quite the impactful appearance.
First, Musk opened his monologue with him stating he had Asperger’s Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that negatively affects social interaction and nonverbal communication. Put into perspective, perhaps this would give a sane explanation for Vanity Fair calling him “batsh** crazy.” But with an over $150 billion net worth, he pretty much has the last laugh with that.
He did say that he was the first with Asperger’s to host the show; although SNL cast member Dan Aykroyd did in 2003. He talked about the couple times OJ hosted and jokingly said “he killed it.” And then there are his remarks about Dogecoin. His mother, who appeared on stage next to him, Maye Musk said, I’m excited for my Mother’s Day gift. I just hope it’s not dogecoin!” He replied, “It is. It sure is.”
Musk was asked on the show, “What is Dogecoin,” to which he said, “It’s the future of currency. It’s an unstoppable financial vehicle that’s going to take over the world.” And when Michael Che said, “So, it’s a hustle?”, Musk replied, “Yeah, it’s a hustle,” and laughed. Those remarks sparked a huge selloff causing Robinhood to reportlo that they were experiencing “intermittent issues.”
Associate Professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, James Angel said “I think he’s having a lot of fun … He can say anything he wants about dogecoin or cryptos fully aware that just him saying something moves the price. Anyone who wants to play the Elon Musk game should be prepared to lose all their money.”
We all should have known an SNL appearance from Elon Musk of all people was going to be anything less than epic.
