While going over some of my favorite gospel performances I’ve been listening to lately, I couldn’t decide on just one, so I decided to do a two for one. Today it’s Melvin Crispell III and John P. Kee and you’ll soon find out just why.
First, Yolanda Adams is a woman who has earned her stripes in the gospel and Christian music communities with a career that’s spanned over 40 years and might I add, doesn’t even look old enough to have that fact attributed to her. One day by sheer happenstance I heard a tribute come across my YouTube Music that stopped me in my tracks and I said it absolutely had to make it to PopGlitz. Melvin Crispell III who I learned about that same day had done a tribute to her at last year’s Soar Awards, something I also just learned about but his vocals have solidified a viewer in the future. I was ready to hand in an offering at the end of those 3 minutes. It even looks like Yolanda herself stood up and shouted at the end.
Our second is this year’s Stellar Awards performance that John P. Kee did which was a melody of some of his most known hits, Show Up, Standing in the Need of Prayer, Clap Your Hands and Oh How Wonderous at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Accompanying him for the lead is his long time mentee Zacardi Cortez who at 41 has been along his side since he was 8 years old. It takes a lot to go bar for bar with John P. Kee but he does so effortlessly.
And lastly as a bonus, we’re throwing in a song that should have been added in our last Sunday Inspiration post that involved Kevin Terry. His song We’ve Come to Praise Him released as a single in 2014 has such an interesting and unique take on a church classic that we just had to add it here. In fact, it’s in my gospel cardio playlist. The 80s electronic intro was really something and an unexpected sound to have in a modern gospel song but it works. It goes to our original post made when we said Terry is amazing as a composer. I was having a late night music discussion where I caught up with a music colleague from over a decade ago where I explained the importance of acknowledging talent and giving people their flowers and I said I may have left this song out before but it would be included here. On another note, I would like a medley of about 6 songs in this same type of tempo. I was saying this song is great and I’d like to find some more that are similar for that workout playlist.
I wanted to close out the weekend on a high note and hope these songs bless you as much as they did us.
