An adolescent aged rapper was selling his mixtape in a mall in Georgia last October as many artists have gotten their start. What was the result? Corey “Lil C Note” Jackson is now facing a number of charges over 4 months later to include disorderly conduct with violence, criminal trespassing and an obstruction felony. After first seeing this story last year, we thought that this was a regular thing for him where he had been there selling mixtapes for months on end possibly ducking police when they tried to say something to him. That wasn’t the case. It appears to be a one off situation as he had only been asked not to sell anything twice in one day. It seems to be a pretty heavy handed response to something seemingly frivolous.

His attorney Mawuli Davis has a different take on what happened here. He says “When he was there, he was not selling any CDs.” A video of the incident shows the arresting officer refusing to speak to the boy’s father over the phone, which is how we’d expect a 12 year old in trouble to react… calling their parents. Jackson’s described the situation as “mind-blowing” and now says he’s afraid of police. “I know that I didn’t do anything wrong,” Jackson said. On Tuesday, his attorney denied the charges in court and Jackson has requested the officer’s body cam footage be released.

He described the situation on Instagram as him being treated like a robber or murderer. For now, it isn’t clear when his next court date is but this is a perfect example of overregulated areas that penalize the simplest of behaviors that no one could think of being problematic. And short of theft or brutal violence, what could a 12 year old possibly do to warrant felony charges in a mall. We’ll be updating as more details come.
