Amanda Seales was a host of The Real briefly this year but quit citing disagreements with production. Regarding her contract, she said, “I didn’t renew it, because it doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to.” Now that a few months have gone by, she’s revealed that she feels production has stolen part of her brand for their show to use after she quit. “Low class” and an “egregious bite” are words she used to describe what happened. Ouch.

With a screenshot of the segment she captioned, “Once again @therealdaytime demonstrates its low class and even lower vibration. Just so we’re clear, this is an EGREGIOUS bite of my “Smart Funny & Black” brand in an attempt to bring black awareness into the programming of The Real. They couldn’t find ANY OTHER WAY to do this without it being a bite of my creation. Yes, I’m saying this on social media because the CONTINUED thievery of black people’s work (even when supported by other BIPOC) needs to be called the F out and also because this is the most energy I’ll give it before going on with my day and creating more dopeness that will inevitably be pilfered by the less talented/ethical/ancestrally connected individuals of our species. Happy Monday. VOTE!”

To be clear on what was stolen, production asked her to create a social justice segment that operated as a game show asking questions about black history and black culture. And that is exactly what she found on television after leaving the show. To make matters worse, when she quit, it partly had to do with how they assigned the one white producer to work on the project which she strongly objected to. She felt her work was being whitewashed while on the show.

During a chat with comedian Godfrey on his Instagram Live this past August, she said, “I did a Smart, Funny and Black game on The Real and I was so excited to get to play my Smart, Funny and Black game on The Real,” Seales said, before adding, “They assigned it to the one white woman producer, but we have three Black women producers and one Black guy producer and I was like ‘Why are you producing this?’ and she was like, ‘So and so assigned it to me,’ and I said, ‘But why would you be producing this? You’re a white woman. You don’t understand what we’re going to be talking about.'”

We know how that feels to have someone bite off of your ideas and worse, choose to not give you credit for it. I’ve lost count of how many times that’s happened. At the end of the day, there’s only one you. People can try to duplicate the ideas but not only do they know the source, but they can’t duplicate the brain they came out of.
