R&B singer Ashanti had a groundbreaking moment in her career Thursday with the big reveal of her having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame dedicated in the recording category. The 41 year old said to Billboard during the reveal ceremony, “It’s surreal “I’m shocked, stunned and over the top grateful. This is a staple in my career and the fact that it will be here forever is a big deal.”
She continued, “I’m not a super emotional person, so the fact that I cried a little bit today is a little weird for me. I’m so humbled and overjoyed to have friends, family and genuine people here supporting me that I love.”
Others in attendance were her long time collaborator Ja Rule and friend Tichina Arnold. And something funny happened, her mother Tina Douglas said she bought Ashanti a fake star 20 years saying she would “get one of these one day.” Well it didn’t take long for her to gain career recognition. It’s been 20 years since her debut album and she received the Guinness Book of World Records for fastest selling female debut album.
She’s appeared in The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, Disney’s animated series The Proud Family, Coach Carter and John Tucker Must Die, among others. She’s also served as Executive Producer for the films executive producer for the films STUCK and Mothers and Daughters, and will begin filming The Plus One this month, which she’s also producing.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame Producer Ana Martinez made a statement saying, “Ashanti is an award-winning singer, author, actress and executive producer. She has proven her talent in many different Hollywood industries and is an example for young girls who want to be in the ‘biz.’”
