The man many of us grew up with on Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos, Bob Saget was found dead Sunday. Deputies were called to his hotel room in the Orlando Ritz Carlton in response to a report of an unresponsive man in the room and he was pronounced dead on the scene. “Detectives found no signs of foul play or drug use in this case,” The Orange County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Twitter. Saget had just performed a two hour set in Jacksonville the night before where he had just thanked Tim Wilkins for opening up for him about 12 hours before he was found dead on Twitter.
On New Year’s Eve Saget had just penned a warm tribute to Betty White after hearing about her passing talking about his experience with her when he was younger. “Betty White. This amazing woman was exactly who you wanted her to be. Razor sharp wit, smart, kind, hilarious, sincere, and so full of love. From the first time I snuck into The Mary Tyler Moore Show at 15 years old and watched her hit everything she said out of the park, to decades later, getting to hang out with her on several occasions, I had a small peek into what a remarkable talent and human being Betty was.””
He went on to talk about working with her saying, “We were on an ABC jet once for a junket and I was sitting across from her, both of us sipping Bloody Mary’s. We had been laughing for hours— I looked into her eyes and faux romantically said, ‘How ‘bout it, Betty, you and me in the bathroom? Mile High Club?’ She answered me before I had a chance to finish the invite— ‘Of course, Bob, you go in there first and I’ll meet you as soon as I finish my drink.’ And then of course she went right to sipping from her straw. I waited in that bathroom for over two hours. (That would be the joke on a joke part, in case you take things literally.)”
Celebrities poured in their tributes to the now deceased actor saying about Saget, “I am broken,” John Stamos tweeted. “I am gutted. I am in complete and utter shock. I will never ever have another friend like him. I love you so much Bobby.” Andy Cohen said, “He had the biggest heart and wore it on his sleeve. He was so generous with his feelings. A mensch.” Joel McHale said, “I’m so shocked at @bobsaget’s passing. One of the most kind & thoughtful people I’ve ever come across & he just happened to be one of the funniest on the planet. I will miss you so much Bob. Love you dear friend. I’m so sorry @kellyrizzo. And so sorry to the rest of the family.”
A piece of history and many of our childhoods are gone. Rest in peace Mr. Tanner.
