While on the red carpet at Black Girls Rock, Brandy Norwood was stopped and shared a little about her new project. Among her list of collaborators, which she says will remain a secret since she wants everything to be a surprise, is her brother Ray J. She said he’s on a new level and one where she said she might have to ask him a thing or two. The album involves a lot of different things she’s never tried before she says, which is why it’s taken so long to complete. But given how she’s been in the top 10 with Daniel Caesar for their collab of Love Again and was just honored with the BMI President’s Award at the BMI Awards last month, now is about as good of a time as any to put out new music.

It only took 7 years to get a new album out of her, but that’s okay. She still commands plenty of industry respect. A little shade came by way of producer Dallas Austin who claimed he saw Monica throw a punch at Brandy right before the two hit the stage in the 90s but even if that was true, that just means she’s the classier of the two. And either way, that was decades ago. What’s the point in even going there now?

The show was hosted by the one and only Niecy Nash with performances by Cece Peniston, Common, Elle Varner, Erykah Badu and more. Designed to celebrate black women who serve the world with style, grace, class and sass as Nash put it, Brandy encompasses all of those and we will be looking forward to her new music once it’s released.
