The Jussie Smollett saga continued today with Chicago’s top prosecutor Kim Foxx in court this morning requesting from a judge to have the documents of the Smollett case unsealed. This would be done for the sake of having the Cook County office of Inspector General to investigate whether any wrongdoing occurred since her involvement in this nationally publicized case has come under heavy scrutiny. It is worth noting that for those familiar with Kim Foxx’ record, she ran on a criminal justice reform agenda where she explicitly was against over sentencing which would explain her decision to sentence Smollett to just community service. But then at the same time there are the text messages between her and an attorney that connected Foxx with a member of Smollett’s family and the dichotomy of the woman she prosecuted for filing a false police report weeks after Jussie Smollett giving the appearance of being a respecter of persons or money rather as a prosecutor.
It’s been six weeks since the 16 charges of disorderly conduct were dropped against Jussie Smollett and while it isn’t clear if a decision will be made right away about unsealing these documents, this isn’t the end of the Foxx-Smollett drama. Tomorrow there will be a separate hearing where a judge will decide if he should recuse himself from deciding if a special prosecutor should review this case as well. R Kelly’s attorneys have also called foul on her involvement with Michael Avenatti, the disgraced attorney facing extortion and embezzlement charges in California and New York representing an accuser of his who’s declared R Kelly was going to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Kelly’s team is calling for text messages and emails between Foxx and Avenatti. And another set of dueling protests occurred this week with one in defense of Foxx and the other Jussie Smollett.
Updates on whether a special prosecutor is chosen to review the case and if the records of the Smollett case become unsealed will be given once available.
