While in town for Essence Festival, rapper Common was stopped by TMZ at Studio Be Gallery in New Orleans to talk for a second about the 15 year old tennis star Coco Gauff. For those under a rock the last week or so, Gauff recently beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon making it only the second time Williams had lost during the first round since 1997. The irony is that she got it honestly as Gauff was trained by Venus’ sister Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou as part of his Champ’Seed foundation in 2015 when she was 11.

When asked if he caught the match, he said not only did he see it, he said Coco is inspiring a world, with confidence he envied. He said that hearing her story, hearing her passion and knowing her confidence, she’s setting the tone for all the young people to know they can do anything. He said she’s a good example of someone determined, someone who looked at her heroes of Venus and Serena, saying she wanted to reach that level and did it.

If you want more Common, he’ll be in Houston this September for a special one night performance with the Houston Symphony performing songs from his new album Let Love out this summer, 25 years after his debut album came out. He also has a new single titled HER Love where he pays homage to hip hop saying how “They trip when you mumble, they trip when you sing,” which given many of the criticisms of hip hop he couldn’t be any closer to the truth.

And for those who might be looking a little closer at him for romantic purposes, he recently did Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk show where he said he was interested in finding the right partner so he could get married so ladies, this might be your chance to shoot your shot.
