Music producer Damon Dash was arrested Wednesday afternoon for not paying child support. His total bill was over $400,000 and a warrant had been out for his arrest since 2015 after not paying both mothers of his children. He told TMZ that he went to one court to pay over $1 million to clear one warrant for his arrest but when he left to go to another, the police were all over him. It was about 7 deputies to be exact. While he was placed in cuffs and processed, he did get escorted from the Manhattan courthouse to the one in Bronx to take care of the other. He ended up spending over a million dollars to take care of the whole ordeal and said that the officers were very king and cooperative in dealing with him. He had been urged to pay his child support before by deputies but chose to leave New York so we’re sure that didn’t help things.
Dash’s ex-wife Rachel Roy and baby mother Cindy Morales are who the money was owed to. Roy and Dash were married from 2005 to 2009 and ended their marriage with a 3 year restraining order Roy secured against Dash, citing domestic violence. He counter-sued claiming she mismanaged their joint fashion business. And while we don’t remember why Dash and Morales broke up, we’re sure there’s still some bad blood over him not marrying her, hence the hard line on insisting on him being arrested over child support. He left court with his own camera crew, fiancee Raquel Horn and a couple attorneys saying he was being crucified “just like Jesus Christ.” He went on to say, “Ain’t no money problems. I went to turn myself in with money! I already paid it! And I still walked it with cuffs,” he ranted, adding: “No more warrants. Everything is clear.” But last week he had a Manhattan federal court filing that listed his income as “virtually nonexistent” and said his only revenue stream was from Lee Daniels who owed him $2 million over his claim that he was cut out of producer credits and profits from Empire. The settled out of court and he’s supposed to be getting the money in installments.
One of my personal issues here is that Dash has worked with and helped a lot of people in the industry including Jay-Z, despite him still bashing him these days. With that being said, when you see someone who helped jumpstart your career, you should be jumping to come to their defense and helping him. There’s no reason he should either not be working or dodging warrants over child support. It’s called paying it back.
