Over the weekend, Atlanta rapper 21 Savage was arrested and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying his visa. It turns out he isn’t from Atlanta at all. He’s from the U.K. and has overstayed his visa for over a decade. Oh, and his real name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph. Damn. The Shade Gods have really been out for blood the last few days. There’s this and just look at Virginia Governor Northam and his shoe polish in the face wearing tendencies and nickname of Coonman being exposed. Savage’s entire persona of his ATL Life isn’t exactly all that true. But to his credit, he came here in 2005, 14 years ago. he’s only 26 so some could argue he’s been here long enough to claim Atlanta.
The “Atlanta” rapper’s deportation became the talk of social media during the Super Bowl making the memes for the evening that much more entertaining to watch as they rolled out. One such person laughing at them that the public didn’t quite see her laughing at it funny was Demi Lovato. She tweeted “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” She later clarified she wasn’t laughing “at anyone getting deported.”
Rappers Wale and Migos member Offset expressed their distaste in her smugness on the matter. Offset wrote “ALL THE MEMES AND S**T AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME. PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AIN’T S**T FUNNY HIS FANILY [sic] DEPENDING ON HIM.” Wale wrote “Why is somebody freedom funny… I don’t get the joke,” Wale quote-tweeted her message. “A lot of people were sending you love light , prayers etc . When people were making jokes about u at a rough time. A lot of people .Bless up.”

Demi deleted her account at the end of it all tweeting “I wasn’t laughig at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke..not have I EVER laughed at that.” People forget that she almost offed herself just a few months ago when she overdosed. After all, she’s been doing rehab since 18. She’s rather fragile. I would have just left her alone before having her vanish off of social media where you can’t see if she’s okay because you decided to be an asshat and pick on her.
There’s a lesson in all of this, though and that is if you’re going to overstay your visa as a celebrity, scratch that, there’s no reason a famous person with management and staff should have visa issues. Get your priorities together, kid. And the other is simply, leave suicidal people alone and quit trolling them on the internet. Aren’t there enough anti-bullying campaigns out there for people to get that? In the words of Melania, #BeBest.
