French born rapper Lucas Coly shocked fans when his manager IDiscoverStars posted to Instagram that he had died. The caption read “Rest in peace @iamlucascoly I love you bro. My heart is ripped in half. Wait for me up there,” before he changed it to just a heart emoji. And the post went on to read, “Being your manager was one of the reasons I stayed here. There’s a hole in my heart right now Lucas. We used to speak on our struggles all the time but smile for the fans. So many people hurt us again and again but we had each other. I don’t know what to do now. I’d be a hypocrite if I told you not to, and I go and do the same.”

Now the The Clark County Office of Corner and Medical Examiner have confirmed that he died by suicide. He had been found in his Vegas home with a bullet hole to his head after sending a series of concerning tweets. And that is something that while it might be shocking to some, suicide doesn’t discriminate by sex, race, income level or popularity. What’s interesting to me about this is the fact that we actually had him on our list of artists to cover for our Song of the Day series and never got around to it. So to look up and see someone we have been following and constantly saying “a little bit later” suddenly being gone when he seemed to have a very promising life and career ahead of him is disappointing. So we’re going to hold to our promise and still cover some of our favorite work of his in honor of his death.

We chose his song Isolated which seems quite appropriate at the moment. It’s a track about loneliness, emotional struggles and feeling disconnected. He raps about his desire for connection with lyrics such as “These niggas and bitches be pitiful/ I keep in my mind, they’re here when it’s good/ But nobody here when it’s critical/ To keep it hunnid, I’m cold as a bitch/ I know they don’t love me, it’s visible/ See I know it ain’t much of a problem/ But fuck it’s to me it the principle.”

We wish Coly’s family the best in dealing with his death. It’s certainly never an easy thing.
