In a Tampa, Forida Dunkin Doughnuts, an elderly customer got beligerent in the drive through, upset at the service and was asked to leave. He chose not to do so, parked and came inside with the intent of giving the store workers a piece of his mind. He decided to call 27 year old employee Corey Pujols the N word. After being asked to repeat himself to make sure that was the response he wanted to give, he did and was then laid out in the floor by Pujols. He was punched so hard in the jaw, his head hit the ground leaving blood in the floor.
After the altercation took place, the customer, a 77 year old man was taken to intensive care and died two days later. An autopsy said he had a skull fracture and brain contusions and the Hillsborough Medical Examiner’s Office doctor ruled the death a homicide. Pujols was arrested at his Tampa home and is facing up to 30 years for the first-degree felony of aggravated manslaughter of a person older than 65.
What is unfortunate about this is that it didn’t have to happen. There was an incident in Virginia not far from where I live that went viral where a woman was told by her neighbor, “You are not the right color, honey” and the N word repeatedly. Imagine if people chose to not act like we were still in the days of Jim Crow and then what the appropriate response is wouldn’t need to be discussed at all.
