The Netflix series Squid Game broke records at the Emmy’s last night as the first foreign language drama to win top honors. Starting with 14 nominations, the series about people facing financial hardships playing deadly games to win big in the end took home a total of 6. Hwang Dong-hyuk won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Lee Jung-jae won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Lee You-mi won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. The series itself won Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode, Outstanding Stunt Performance, and Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program. Season 2 is currently being scripted.

South Korean President congratulated Lee and Hwang saying the entire nation was celebrating their accomplishments. And the significance of the film’s big wins is important given how it came out just as Asian hate was rising in America during the COVID crisis amid the former President insisting on referring to the coronavirus as the “China virus,” despite people publicly saying it was causing violence in their communities. The community won in the end.
Other notable moments include Lizzo winning Outstanding Competition Program for her Watch Out for the Big Grrrls Amazon series. In her acceptance speech she said, “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media — someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but b***h, it’s going to have to be you.'” She finished off saying, “This is for the big grrrls!”

Sheryl Lee Ralph accepted her first Emmy which is hard to imagine because she is as Yahoo News called her a “bonafied legend.” She walked up to the stage and began singing about being an “endangered species” and told the audience “To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like. This is what striving looks like. And don’t you ever, ever give up on you.” She went on to thank Abbott Elementary show creator Quinta Brunson for believing in her, her husband and children for standing by her side and everyone that voted for her.

Jimmy Kimmel was accused of using white privilege to steal attention from Quinta Brunson when she gave her acceptance speech as the winner for Best Writing for a Comedy for Abbott Elementary where he chose to lie on the floor next to her mic stand throughout her entire speech as some type of gag. It didn’t exactly go over well with viewers. The joke was supposed to be that he got so drunk at the bar after losing an Emmy that he fell unconscious. Will Arnet had to carry him off stage. In short, Brunson said she’ll be on his show later this week and may punch him when she sees him. We sure hope so.

Quinta Brunson addressed Jimmy Kimmel laying on stage during her #Emmys acceptance speech: “I felt like the bit didn’t bother me that much…Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him. I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face.” https://t.co/Bm8Bfhyi0k pic.twitter.com/cMDuZbq0AQ
