JoJo Siwa’s one of the biggest Gen Z stars out, coming up on Dance Moms and known for wearing colorful bows in her hair. But all that changed when she debuted the video for her new single Karma going from a tropical island to a lust filled all white party on a yacht. Donning the same look she sported at this month’s iHeartRadio Music Awards, paying homage to Gene Simmons of K.I.S.S., she sings about “doing bad things” with a clever twist on The 10 Commandments saying, “Thou shalt not lie, Thou shalt not cheat, Thou shalt not get caught.”
At a listening party for the song, she told the audience “I’ve grown up for 11 years now in front of the world, and I have always been about making art. That’s what I love to do. I’ve always been genuinely myself, and I’ve always created stuff that felt true to me,” according to Rolling Stone Magazine. She went on to say “As I got older, I really wanted to create stuff that was gonna make the world say, ‘What the f–k?’ And the fun thing is with ‘Karma,’ I wanted this first breakout adult moment to do that,” she added. “I wanted this first adult breakout moment to make people’s heads turn.”
This new direction she’s gone in didn’t come without criticism. One fan on X told her, “JoJo Siwa publicly saying in an interview that she wants to have a Miley Cyrus Bangerz era rebrand is quite literally the opposite of having a Bangerz era rebrand like it’s already too plotted and inauthentic…” Another said, “Why does JoJo Siwa look like she just debuted as the latest WWE villain?” and “Ummm.. JoJo Siwa looks a MESS.” And to her defense has come stars like the man she’s been channeling, Gene Simmons who said “Never be ordinary. Always be extraordinary. JoJo is extraordinary and she looks cool.” He also said, “JoJo is cool. Anybody who doesn’t get it is just jealous, period.”
