Kanye West has had now a series of official album listening events for his latest project DONDA that were supposed to come a day before the album came out and it took what we last counted as 3 for it to finally be released. It might have been more but we finished counting. The issue from the first to the second was that after breaking a series of streaming records that he wouldn’t be able to get anyone to come to two high profile events in the same venue because he was staying there everyday until it was finished.
Well Kanye proved he not only was going to get this album done but he would have a show doing so. His last DONDA event in Chicago involved him recreating his childhood home in the stadium in Chicago, giving out vaccines, setting himself on fire and even remarrying Kim Kardashian. There’s pretty much no topping the latter after all the news they made breaking up… whether it’s real or not.
After numerous delays, DONDA officially is out today with features from the Weeknd and Lil Baby (“Hurricane”), Travis Scott and Baby Keem (“Praise God”), Young Thug, the late Pop Smoke (“Tell the Vision”), Jay Electronica and the Lox (“Jesus Lord”), Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Roddy Ricch, Ariana Grande (“Donda”) and many more.
During the listening event, Kanye played Jail with a verse from DaBaby that replaced the original from Jay-Z but because DaBaby’s team didn’t approve the release, the album version is still Jay-Z’s version. In a text thread Kanye shared, he said he’s not taking DaBaby off of the song because he was the only person who publicly said they would vote for him. Now this doesn’t mean that Dababy’s verse might appear on the streaming versions of the album. His 2016 release of The Life of Pablo was changed a number of times after it was released and kept getting reuploaded. He even uploaded a new track over the last couple hours. Now we’re just going to see if the public feels the album lives up to the hype around it.
