There are few others in hip hop that are bigger sports fans that Lil Wayne and it explains his closeness to Kobe Bryant. Last night at the 2020 BET Awards, he performed his 2009 track Kobe Bryant, adding lyrics paying tribute to Kobe and his daughter Gianna.

“This is Black power status/ Two fingers for the Mambacita/ I’m screamin’ Black Mamba matters,” Lil Wayne sang.

“My heart goes out to Vanessa and the whole Black Mamba family” Wayne added to the song, speaking to Bryant’s wife, Vanessa. He ended with, “Rest in power/ Let’s hope for peace/ Black lives matter, facts.”

This added to the already ample praise he bestowed upon him in the original version that said, “He the greatest on the court …
And I’m the greatest on the verse.
Goin’ for the 4th ring like it was his 1st…
Gotta get the gleam. Do it for Kareem …
2-4 so nice. My flow is so mean.”

And let’s talk about his attire for the evening. He donned a pair of $725 white and black Balenciaga trainers. But this is Lil Wayne we are talking about. We didn’t expect anything less. In May he said about Bryant that “He’s inspired not only songs, but he’s inspired me in life in general.” Same, Wayne… same. We know the feeling. We grew up watching him. it’s hard to believe.

One thing we didn’t get a chance to see was his new girlfriend. Yes, he’s with someone else just weeks after breaking up with his fiance. He’s human y’know. Award shows are a good way to see the status of relationships. You may remember that’s how we found out Alicia Keys was with Swizz Beatz that time they kept sneaking out to the bathroom together. His new girl is a plus sized model named Denise Bidot and she’s gorgeous. Kudos to Wayne on that one and showing Kobe the tribute he deserved.
