Love & Hip Hop Hollywood’s Misster Ray received a proclamation today from the City of Petersburg, where he went to college at Virginia State University and is currently enrolled in grad school. He went back for his Masters in Media Management and was recognized for both returning to support his alma mater and for being a best selling author. His new book, A Mess with a Message catalogs his 15 years in the industry which is a far cry from the 15 minutes most people get if that.

Starting in Petersburg, Misster Ray, whose real name is Ray Cunningham starred on BET’s College Hill: Virginia State University back in 2006. He was also the network’s first on air gay talent which we’ve complimented him on as that’s a big deal, especially at that point in time. Seeing gays on television was certainly a thing looked down nupon at the time. Even on Love & Hip Hop, that’s a more recent thing to even see gay men on that show.

We attended Ray’s proclamation presentaton which was also attended by Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham, his parents, a sister of his and Virginia State University’s Associate Vice President of Division of Student Success and Engagement, Regina Tyler. The community group’s Petersburg Solution and Petersburg Social were represented there as well as media. It’s always good to see people such as Ray not forgetting where he comes from and willing to visit. The Mayor was all smiles from ear to ear, the most excited I’ve ever seen him. I’ve been in Petersburg which also happens to be Trey Songz’ hometown for nearly the last 4 years and I can vouch for the fact that those such as himself who reach back to where they came from do inspire others. We look forward to the next item he’s going to get a proclamation for. We have a feeling that’s going to be sooner than later.
