Hit making hip hop producer Metro Boomin, responsible for hits such as Bad & Bougie and The Weeknd’s Heartless just cashed in on his catalog by selling a portion of it for a whopping $70 million. The lucky buyer is Shamrock Capital who purchased Taylor Swift’s first 6 albums back in 2020 and a huge portion of Dr. Dre’s for $200 million. Shamrock recently announced they raised $600 million to acquire film, TV, music video games, and sports rights.

And with his current level of success, this catalog is almost certain to bring in some big bucks. He recently released his latest album HEROES & VILLAINS with features from Future, Chris Brown, 21 Savage, Young Nudy, Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, the late Takeoff, The Weeknd and more, which went on to debut at Number 1. Boomin, whose real name is Leland Tyler Wayne has a total of 99 entries in the Hot 100 including two Number 1s, 10 top 10s. He’s spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the Rap Producers chart and three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Producers and Hot 100 Songwriters charts.

This acquisition goes along with other industry catalog acquisitions such as Juice WRLD’s catalog being sold to Opus Music Group for a 9 figure sum. Future’s catalog has been sold to Influence Media Partners for between $65-75 million. This is all part of recent trends in an increase investment in the genre. Nari Matsuura, a partner and co-leader of valuation experts Citrin Cooperman’s music economics and valuation services practice stated “According to our data, the number of hip-hop deals increased in 2022.” The bias of not knowing hip hop artists by some financial buyers is also starting to fade. “Hip-hop and Latin [assets] were trading at a discount five years ago, but those genres’ valuations have caught up with the marketplace,” says one music asset trader. We’re sure this recent purchase of Metro Boomin’s catalog is simply a sign of more to come.
