Meghan Markle stopped the world with claims of racial bias in her March interview with Oprah Winfrey who has now spoken about the interview. In a new episode of Nancy O’Dell’s new TalkShopLive streaming show, Oprah said she was shocked that Markle “went all the way there” on race. Well most of us were. That was the understatement of the century. Few were surprised to hear about racism from the British media but it also looks like we also got a front seat to the inner workings of a biracial family behind the scenes.
“I had no idea that it would have the reverberating impact that it has had and continues to have,” Winfrey stated.
“Our shared intention was the truth. They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible,” Winfrey continued.
Oprah said she was “surprised” to hear there were concerns about the complexion of her and Prince Harry’s child. “What? You’re going there? You’re going all the way there,” Winfrey said to O’Dell. “The reason why it was such a powerful interview … was when you have somebody else who is willing to be as open, as vulnerable, as truthful as they were.” Winfrey said she went to great lengths as well to make sure the 3 hour interview didn’t leak ahead of time so that nothing that was said would be “misconstrued.”
It takes guts to do an interview as the one Markle did with Winfrey but she did it. Of course, anytime accusations of racism are made, there are naysayers because there’s a segment of the population dedicated to pretending it isn’t there. Then there’s Piers Morgan who got into trouble for mansplaining her as a liar.. which he deserved. But most importantly, the interview panned out the way that it did because she felt comfortable enough with Oprah Winfrey to be vulnerable, something that not everyone is able to get to happen.
