When listening to Pharrell’s smash hit Happy, it’s hard to imagine any other emotion going into that song but pure happiness, but for him to tell it, he was in a dark place when he wrote it and things were the complete opposite. The song was written for the movie Despicable Me 2, and it came after he had written a whopping 9 other songs that had been rejected. Discussing how the song came about on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music interview series, he said “You didn’t wake up one morning and decide you were going to make a song about an emotion,” referring to the song Happy.

He added, “It was only until you were out of ideas, and you asked yourself a rhetorical question, and you came back with a sarcastic answer, and that’s what ‘Happy’ was. How do you make a song about a person that’s so happy that nothing can bring them down? And I sarcastically answered it and put music to it, and that sarcasm became the song, and that broke me.” He said that the success of the song showed him his overall insignificance in the universe. “It’s so crazy for us to think like as individuals, everything comes from us. Your ideas, everything that you get, is coming from a library of existence. Nothing is new under the sun.” He wrote the songs Blurred Lines and Get Lucky around the same time, both songs he was commissioned to write which he credits the universe with their success.

In other Pharrell news, every time he hits the red carpet, his vampire like youthfulness always comes up, something People Magazine asked him about recently regarding what’s his secret. He said “Believe it or not, exfoliation, man. Exfoliation is the key.” He added: “Now, there is a routine, and you can find them online, but I think probably the most active portion of it all… no, it’s two. It’s exfoliating, but it’s also in here. “It’s literally in here. That inner child – don’t ever silence it. Don’t ever (say), ‘Oh, I can’t do this anymore.’ “No. That’s why you should absolutely do it right now. The people who want to put you in a box? They tried to do that to me too, and here we are.” Well we know some people who are old and childish and look their age but okay, Pharrell. We’ll take your word for it. For him to age the way that he does, you would think he’s never stressed a day in his life making us question his claims of Happy breaking him, but we digress.
